Among towering giant trees, the African baobab and Montezuma cypress are two formidable examples. Maybe nothing is coming into your mind when you think of either species. African Baobab

The African baobab tree is a species with a barrel-like trunk that leads an unusually long life. They are the root and lifeline of the habitats they live within. Another name for the baobab is the “Tree of Life.” The older individuals usually have hollow trunks due to multiple stems fusing over time.
Montezuma Cypress
Another towering, giant tree is the Montezuma cypress. This species also has a thick trunk and tends to lead an average tree lifecycle. The trees are important for wildlife in their habitats both as shelter and nourishment. The Nahuatl name for the tree is āhuēhuētl which roughly translates to “old man of the water” or “drum in water”. The Montezuma cypress rarely displays cypress knees common to other species.
The Five Differences Between These Towering Giants

Before diving into the differences, climate change is harming both the African baobab and Montezuma cypress trees. Many of the largest and oldest African baobab trees are dying or have already died. This is due to colonial land theft and capitalist greed. Intense droughts due to colonial and capitalist resource hoarding have left the Montezuma cypress trees to die in droves.

The first difference between these towering giant trees is in the names. The bases of their common names are completely unique, baobab versus cypress. The scientific classification differs as well. The distinction begins in the Clade since the Montezuma cypress is under Gymnospermae while the African baobab is under Angiosperms then into Eudicots and finally Rosids. The scientific name for the African baobab is A. Digitata, and for the Montezuma cypress, it’s T. mucronatum.
Habitat
Both towering giant trees grow in different parts of the world. Though both trees do well during droughts, the Montezuma cypress typically grows near bodies of water in groups. The African baobab, on the other hand, grows in solitary in the savanna. Plus, the Montezuma cypress is native to Mexico and parts of Guatemala, the United States, and Belize. Alternatively, the African baobab grows throughout mainland Africa.
Shape

While both towering giant trees have thick trunks and plenty of branches, the shapes are distinct. The African baobab tree has a smooth and wide trunk that generally only splits once or twice. The branches are concentrated at the top, similar to broccoli. They usually stick straight out from the trunk. On the other hand, the Montezuma cypress has a rough and wide trunk that doesn’t usually split. The branches are large, reaching, and usually twist and curve.
Foliage

The Arbol del Thule (Thule Tree), a Montezuma cypress, has the stoutest tree trunk in the world.
Both the African baobab and the Montezuma cypress have leaves that help them absorb water and nutrients. The African baobab sports a thin layer of long leaves. These leaves are edible and come as palmate compounds. In comparison, the Montezuma cypress tree boasts a thick layer of green- or rust-colored leaves. They are arranged in spirals and lay in two horizontal ranks.
Seasonal or Evergreen

Both the African baobab and Montezuma cypress live through all seasons during the year. They adapt differently depending on the time. The Montezuma cypress is an evergreen that never loses its leaves. The African baobab tree does lose its leaves during the dry season, which can last about eight months a year (longer with climate change).
Also, the African baobab tree produces flowers, which the Montezuma cypress does not. The flowers of the baobab tree appear in both dry and wet seasons. The round buds have cone-shaped tips. The flowers grow as singles and hang at the end of a stalk. The flowers open for one night before rotting and falling off. Plus, the baobab tree produces edible fruits.
