Cervalces scotti is an extinct creature that last lived perhaps 13,500 years ago in North America. This large deer has been called the stag moose or elk moose, and its large size indicates it could have been a formidable herbivore. Does that mean it could overcome one of the largest modern bears, though? Today, we’re going to examine a Kodiak bear vs a massive stag moose fight and see which of them has what it takes to walk away the winner.

We’ll compare several facets of these two mammals and see whether the large brown bear could bring down one of the largest deer to live in North America.

Comparing a Kodiak Bear and a Stag Moose

The most significant differences between a Kodiak bear and a stag moose can be found in their size and predatory behavior.
Kodiak BearStag Moose
SizeWeight: between 600 and 1,400 pounds, but some can weigh over 1,500 pounds
Height: from 3 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder
Length: 6 to 8 feet or more
Weight: about 1,500 pounds
Height: 6 feet tall at the shoulder
Length: about 8.2 feet
Speed– Roughly 30 mph at full sprint for short distances  – Estimated 35 mph based on modern moose speeds (based on size, not species)
Defenses– Large, thickly built body makes it hard to do damage to this creature
– Tough skin and layers of fat cushion blows
– Threat display would frighten off most creatures
– Senses and instincts would help identify danger
– The deer’s speed would help it get away from trouble
– The animal’s size would make it a difficult target for many predators
Offensive Capabilities– Has claws measuring between 4 and 6 inches
– While claws aren’t that sharp, they can still be used in a fight
– Longest canine teeth measure about 2 to 3 inches long
– Bite force estimated to be between 930 and 1,000 PSI
– Massive paws could deal powerful blows
– The stag moose would probably kick and stomp its attackers like modern deer and moose
– The stag moose could also charge with its large set of antlers
Predatory Behavior– Mostly eats plants, salmon, human garbage, carrion, seaweed, and berries
– Kodiak bears do not frequently hunt deer or elk
– Opportunistic hunters that chase and kill prey
– Was an herbivorous creature that didn’t hunt other animals

What Are the Key Differences Between a Kodiak Bear and a Stag Moose?

The most significant differences between a Kodiak bear and a stag moose can be found in their size, predatory behavior, and offensive capabilities. The average Kodiak bear weighs between 600 and 1,400 pounds, but it can weigh up to 1,500 pounds or even more. It stands 3 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder and grows from 6 to 8 feet. Meanwhile, the stag moose weighed about 1,500 pounds, stood 6 feet tall at the shoulder, and grew about 8.2 feet long.

The Kodiak bear is an opportunistic predator that rarely hunts down prey, and the stag moose is an herbivore. While the stag moose can attack with kicks, stomps, and charges featuring its antlers, Kodiak bears use a flurry of powerful bites, smacks, claw slashes, and vicious shakes to kill their prey.

All three of these elements will come into play during this fight.

What Are the Key Factors in a Fight Between a Kodiak Bear and a Stag Moose?

Every fight in the wild boils down to a handful of very impactful elements. In this case, those factors are size, speed, offenses, defenses, and predatory capabilities.

We have to explore each of these factors relative to the Kodiak bear and stag moose to understand what sets them apart and to see which of them has the advantage in this epic battle. Let’s break down these elements and see which mammal has the most going for them.

Kodiak Bear vs. Stag Moose: Size

The stag moose is larger than the average Kodiak bear. Stag moose weighed about 1,500 pounds, stood about 6 feet tall at the shoulder, and could grow about 8.2 feet long.

The Kodiak bear is no small creature, though. These animals can weigh between 600 and 1,400 on average, but they can easily surpass 1,500 pounds. Also, they stand about 3 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder, but they can rear back on their hind legs and stand about 10 feet tall. Kodiak bears also grow about 6 to 8 feet long.

The stag moose has the size advantage.

Kodiak Bear vs. Stag Moose: Speed

A large Kodiak bear can run about as fast as other brown bears, up to 30 mph or slightly more. It can only keep up this speed for short distances, though.

Meanwhile, we don’t know how fast the stag moose could run. Based on what we know about other sizeable deer, like modern-day moose, this creature may have run at speeds of up to 35 mph. Like many other deer, the stag moose probably had better endurance than the Kodiak bear.

The stag moose has a speed advantage, but we’re mostly awarding it this advantage because of its speed and stamina.

Kodiak Bear vs. Stag Moose: Defenses

The Kodiak bear is a thickly built, heavily muscled creature that can take all sorts of punishment and keep fighting. They have thick fur and a layer of fat that cushions blows and can help stop puncture wounds. Their true defense is their size and defensive posturing, which would be enough to send anything but the most confident predators scrambling.

The stag moose also relied on its size and speed to get out of trouble. Yet, the deer’s senses were probably more important in helping it locate danger and get away. While they were larger than the Kodiak bear, they were far more likely to flee than fight.

The Kodiak bear has a defensive advantage in this fight.

Kodiak Bear vs. Stag Moose: Offensive Capabilities

The stag moose was not a hunter, but it had plenty of ways to stave off attacks. Most importantly, they could charge their enemies and use their antlers to knock them over or potentially puncture their flesh.

Whether they knocked them on the ground, or the creature was short, the stag moose could also stomp on and kick their prey. Stag moose had powerful legs, so a kick or a series of stomps could prove fatal.

However, the Kodiak bear has plenty of weapons in its arsenal. These creatures have massive, powerful forelegs with gigantic paws on them. A single smack from one of these paws could disorient their prey. Yet, that’s the least of their prey’s worries. The Kodiak bear has claws measuring between 4 and 6 inches. While they’re not especially sharp, they can still help the bear grab their prey and slash them.

The Kodiak bear also uses a powerful bite with a force up to 1,000 PSI, driving its longest teeth which measure from 2 to 3 inches into their prey. The bear uses all these attacks in a single attack called mauling. They’ll climb on their prey, bite them, shake them, and do everything they can to cause fatal injuries before feeding.

The Kodiak bear has an advantage in offensive capabilities.

Kodiak Bear vs. Stag Moose: Predatory Behavior

The Kodiak bear is not much of a predator. It prefers to eat various plants, carrion, salmon, human garbage, and more. However, they can hunt, and some of them do. As predators, they can sense, find, and chase their prey before taking it down and killing it. They’d rather find food than chase it, though.

Meanwhile, stag moose were herbivores, so they don’t have any predatory behavior. In fact, they were probably worried about not becoming another animal’s dinner.

The Kodiak bear has the advantage in terms of predatory behaviors.

Who Would Win in a Fight Between a Kodiak Bear and a Stag Moose?

The Kodiak bear would win a fight against a stag moose. The Kodiak bear would win this fight in one of two ways. First, the stag moose could probably just outrun the Kodiak bear if it had enough starting distance. That means the Kodiak bear wins by scaring off the prey.

In a direct fight, the Kodiak bear would still mangle and maul the stag moose. The raw power of a Kodiak bear is not something that a stag moose would overcome. Unless the Kodiak bear was knocked out by a charge followed up by some powerful kicks and stomps, the moose is going down.

The bear would bite, claw, mount, smack, and tear at the moose until it lost the ability or will to fight. The stag moose could not fight off something that is so much more powerful than it.

The stag moose was an exceptionally large mammal. However, modern Kodiak bears can be just as heavy and long as them, and they’re nearly as tall on four legs. Given that bears often climb on their prey, the Kodiak bear would tower over the stag moose by standing on its hind legs, somewhat eliminating its height advantage.

With all these things in mind, it seems more likely that the giant predator would win against a giant herbivore.
