When you’re trying to stop birds from hitting your windows, the main step is to make sure that birds can see that there’s a window there. Most of the time, birds fail to avoid a window simply because they don’t know that there’s one in front of them. For many reasons, birds will mistake reflections in the window for something else, and not realize the danger ahead.

Unfortunately, most interactions with a window will kill a bird. Even if you watch them get up and start flying away, they will often die a short time later due to a brain bleed. It’s estimated that somewhere between 100 million and 1 billion birds die every year in the US alone from window collisions.

Thankfully, it’s rather easy to do your part to stop collisions around your home. You just have to know what to do, and these 4 options will help you get started, so keep reading below.

1. Stickers

Emotion, Characters, Contrasts, Attitude, Label

Stickers help to break up the reflection in the window so that birds realize that they can’t keep flying.

Putting stickers and decals all over your windows is one of the easiest ways to protect birds and stop them from hitting the window. You can use anything that sticks or attaches to the window, including stickers, decals, sticky notes, and sun catchers on the window.

However, you want to make sure you do it right. The stickers go on the outside of the window, and not on the inside. Otherwise, there will still be times when birds are unable to see.

One of the downsides of stickers is that you can’t just put one or two on a window and call it good. You need to have enough decals and stickers that almost the entire window is covered. There can’t be enough space between the stickers that a bird would think it can fit through.

Unfortunately, this means that many people aren’t up to this idea, as it blocks a lot of the view through their windows.

2. Paint

Paint is another great way to keep birds from your window.

Let’s make one thing clear. Unless you never want to have clear windows again, you don’t want to use any old paint. You need tempera paint specifically. Or, if you don’t want to use that, soap works just as well.

Just smear streaks on your windows. You can do a fun piece of artwork, big dots, or a two-inch by two-inch grid.

These paints are easy enough to wipe off with a cloth and some water. However, both are durable enough that most storms won’t be able to wipe them off.

Any dry bar of soap will work if you don’t want to go and buy paint from the store. Just rub dry soap on the window and it will leave streaks. It’s a low-cost way to keep birds from your window.

Like with stickers and decals, you want to put them on the outside of your window.

3. Wind Curtains

Wind curtains don’t look a lot like your traditional curtains, but they do a great job of keeping birds out.

If you want something that doesn’t have to be reapplied or block your windows all the time, then think about using wind curtains. Unlike other curtains, these go on the outside of your windows and glass doors.

In reality, they are nothing more than ropes dangling from the top of your window. They sit at the top and move in the breeze, which helps them to deter birds.

For a simple version, just throw some netting over your windows. Or, you can buy the curtains made specifically for protecting the birds.

These take up much less of the view from your window, and they do a pretty good job. They were designed specifically for keeping away birds and were tested thoroughly, so you know they work well.

4. Transparent Film

Window film is a little more expensive than the other options, but it provides the best results.

Another option is to use bird-specific transparent film. This is a great option for those who don’t want to lose visibility from their windows, but want to protect birds. It allows you to see out of your window but makes it white from the outside so birds don’t get caught looking in the reflection.

This kind of film has multiple purposes. For one, it prevents people from seeing inside your home. There are also tint options if your windows let in a little too much light.

There are quite a few options, including solid colors or fun patterns, so you aren’t stuck with something simple and boring to protect the birds.
