Vizslas are smart and energetic dogs that seem to have endless stamina. With their sleek bodies and beautiful red color, they may look regal, but they are happy to undertake just about any active pursuit, as long as they can be with their owners. Originally bred to be hunting dogs, Vizslas are very loving and devoted to their people and want to be with their families all the time. But what about male vs. female Vizslas, is there a big difference between the sexes for this breed?

History of the Vizsla

The Vizsla originates in Hungary, hence why the breed is also known as the Hungarian Pointer. The dogs are said to date back over 1,000 years ago, and there are primitive stone etchings that show hunters with their Vizsla-like dogs. Vizslas were the preferred hunting dog of the Astro-Hungarian empire. The purpose of their reddish gold color was for camouflage while hunting. Today’s Vizsla is much more than a hunter. Besides acting as beloved family companions, Vizslas work in all kinds of jobs, such as service dogs, sniffer dogs, and search and rescue.

The Vizsla is a medium-sized dog. Their lean build perfectly suits their natural athleticism. Both males and females generally have a light frame. However, a male Vizsla will typically be more full-bodied and solidly built than a female Vizsla. The standard weight range for males is typically between 55 to 60 pounds. Females are usually a bit lighter. The breed standard for females is to weigh between 44 to 55 pounds.

Male Vizslas are taller than females. They should be about 22 to 24 inches tall at the shoulders. Female Vizslas are more petite, at 21 to 23 inches tall at the shoulders.

Male Vizslas are usually more muscular-looking than females.

Males are overall larger dogs than the females. Besides being taller and weighing more, they tend to have more muscle mass. Female Vizlas are also strong and athletic. However, they are usually a bit more delicate in frame size.

Maturity of Male vs. Female Vizslas

Female Vizslas may be calmer earlier since they mature earlier.

Male dogs generally become fertile after they turn six months, reaching full sexual maturity between 12 to 15 months. Larger dogs like Vizslas may be on the later end of the spectrum. Female dogs, on the other hand, usually experience their first heat sometime between the ages of six to 18 months. Vizslas commonly go into their first heat sometime between 10 to 14 months old.

Both male and female Vizslas are active dogs that have a lot of energy and need to be kept busy.

Vizslas love to be with their owners. They even are sometimes called “Velcro dogs”. Both males and females can become very attached to their “person”, and may experience separation anxiety when away from them.

Male Vizslas generally are thought to be more physically affectionate and clingy than females are. They may be more needy. Additionally, males are likely to be somewhat more wild than females. Their play can be more rowdy.

Females are typically calmer than males. They also mature faster, so may exhibit more of their adult temperament earlier. Generally, female dogs are thought to be more territorial while males act more dominant. But this highly depends on the individual dog.

Training of Male vs. Female Vizslas

Vizslas, whether male or female, are eager to work and please their owners.

Female Vizslas mature a little faster than males, so training may go easier with them in the beginning. Males, on the other hand, might be more stubborn as they begin the training process. Nonetheless, both male and female Vizslas do well with positive training methods.

The breed is eager to please and will respond well to training where they receive rewards for demonstrating correct behavior. Since Vizslas are working dogs at heart, they are smart and love to try new activities. They excel at hunting, agility, and tracking. But really, they’re happy doing anything athletic.

Both male and female Vizslas are active and energetic companions. They love their families and are very affectionate. They love to learn and are happy to try new things. Whether male or female, it’s no wonder Vizslas are beloved by many.
