Finding a way to survive in the wild is not easy for every animal. The challenge of surviving in an environment they are either born into or thrust into can be daunting. However, lacking one of their legs makes survival that much harder.

Black Bear Sighting in Canada

This next TikTok video takes us to Ontario, Canada. This short video clip was submitted by a user named Bobby, who captured this sighting on a trail camera. He submitted this clip to the TrailCamNut TikTok page. This page typically features trail cameras set up in Idaho, though this particular submission comes from Ontario, Canada. They film a variety of animals, such as deer, bears, and moose. The TrailCamNut page shares its short description below.

“Check out this 3-legged bear that was captured on camera in Ontario Canada. Thanks, Bobby, for the submission!”

American Black Bear in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

American black bears are omnivores who eat things such as fruit, berries, leaves, fish, and young elk.

Three-Legged Bear Passing By

At the start of the video, a trail camera has been set up. This enormous black bear knows that something is off. He senses that the camera does not belong in his environment. So he heads over to sniff it out, and once satisfied it poses no threat, trots off. Once he’s determined it’s not going to move or hurt him, we see him trot off.

But not before we see that this black bear is no ordinary black bear. This bear only has three legs! It is clear from the video that this bear has learned to walk confidently on only three legs. The missing limb is either the result of an old injury or a congenital condition. As he continues to sniff around for food, we watch him hobble off down the wooded path.

What is the Biggest Threat to a Bear?

There are eight species of bear. These species are the North American black bear, brown bear, polar bear, Asiatic black bear, Andean bear, panda bear, sloth bear, and sun bear. These bears can weigh anywhere from 50 to 1,500 pounds, and in some cases even more. The extinct short-faced bear (Arctodus simus), the largest bear known to science, weighed between 1,600–1,900 pounds, while the largest modern bear on record, a polar bear, weighed over 2,200 pounds.

For all these species, there are various reasons why they die. It could be environmental factors, conflict with other animals, or hunting. However, according to the National Park Service, the biggest threat is habitat loss.
