Dachshunds are consistently one of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the United States. It’s easy to see why, with their long bodies, stubby little legs, and perky little tails. They go by a variety of affectionate colloquial names, like doxie, sausage dog, or wiener dog. Lovers of the breed have their choice of smooth-haired, wire-haired, or long-haired varieties in different colors and two sizes: standard and miniature. A third, “rabbit” size in Germany is not recognized in the U.S. or U.K. You can find out tons more about the breed at the American Kennel Club and dedicated dachshund fan sites.
If you just adopted a dachshund, one of your most important decisions will be what to name your funny little friend. We’re here to help. We have some general guidance for you on how to choose a dog name, and then list after list of possible names that could be just right for this breed. We even made up some original ones you’ll find nowhere else!
How to Name a Dog
Here are a few general ideas to help you choose a name you and your dog will like:
- Short – Short, choppy names are easier to say and for your dog to recognize and respond to.
- Nicknames – If you like a long name, you can always have a short nickname for everyday use. Go ahead and name your dog “Odel Waddlesbury-Hugglesworth IV” but just call him “Odie” for short. Save his full name for dinner parties.
- Not confusing – Don’t name your dog something that could be confused with a common command. For example: “Fletch” sounds too much like “fetch.”
- Consonants – Names with consonants, like Barney or Katie, have sharp sounds that are easy for dogs to distinguish.
- Vowels – Long vowel sounds like “ay” or “ee” at the end of the name make a tone change that will grab your dog’s attention.
- Positive – Don’t name your dog something that will embarrass you when others hear you using it.
- People names – In American culture, it’s popular to give dogs people names (Katie, Bill, etc.) However, some names from other cultures may be offensive to people of that background. You also don’t want to choose a name too similar to your human friends and family members, to avoid confusion.
- Renaming – Experts say it’s fine to rename an adopted dog that already has a name. The dog likely does not connect the name with itself as an identity but thinks of it more as a command that is followed by good consequences. It will learn its new name along with other new commands and rules at your house.
Not every name in our lists below meets all these standards, but you can modify them as you wish. Maybe you want to name your dog “Bratwurst” but shorten it to “Bratty!” Have fun with it.
