Once roaming across Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe, cheetahs are now limited to a handful of remote regions due to habitat loss and hunting. Today, five recognized subspecies survive, distinguished mainly by geography and subtle differences in coat pattern and coloration.
Although cheetahs are not classified among the big cats because they cannot roar, they are extraordinary predators. Their lightweight frames, flexible spines, long legs, and specialized muscles allow them to accelerate with unmatched power. In short bursts, cheetahs can exceed 60 miles per hour, making them the fastest land mammals on Earth and one of nature’s most impressive examples of evolutionary specialization.
