Massive Wildfire Footage Captured From Space

This stunning video footage captured via Landsat satellite sensors reveals powerful infrared views of some of the world’s most intense forest fires. You’ll see blazes like California’s Dixie Fire and Caldor Fire (which ignited in August 2021), the Jerusalem Hills fire in Israel (over 6,000 acres burned just west of Jerusalem), an active fire west of Lake Winnipeg in Canada, multiple raging infernos in Siberia, Russia, and wildfires blazing across Greece.

Landsat’s near-infrared and shortwave infrared bands allow scientists to detect active flames, smoke plumes, and burn scars—even in remote or cloud-covered regions. These images help researchers and land managers monitor fire progression, assess damage, and plan post-fire recovery efforts.

Stay with us as we walk through these infrared scenes and show how satellite technology gives us a unique and sometimes chilling perspective on nature’s destructive force.
