When we’re talking about land in the United States, it’s easy to figure out that there are lands that are private and belong to private citizens, but also lands that are public. These public lands belong to no one but in fact, they do belong to an entity. And that entity is a federal government. These lands are managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the Fish and Wildlife Services, the Forest Service, and the National Park Service. These lands encompass various things, but most of them are public and for the people so that the residents of the United States can enjoy these lands. In total, the United States federal government owns around 615 million acres of land in the country. This comes out to about 27% of the nation’s acreage.
