Whether you grew up watching Wild Kingdom or The Lion King, tales of magnificent lions roaming the African continent are sure to capture the imagination. One particular lion in recent years has captivated millions around the globe, thanks to documentary footage and stories from international wildlife media. Read on to learn more about the legendary Scarface, one of the most dominant and powerful alpha lions ever to rule over the Masai Mara.

Meet Scarface

This well-known lion lived on the Masai Mara National Reserve in southwest Kenya from 2007 to 2021. Scarface, otherwise known as Scar, and his brothers Morani, Hunter, and Sikio were known as the Four Musketeers, ruling over a large territory in the Masai Mara. Scarface got his name after injuries he sustained in a successful territorial fight around 2012, which resulted in his scarred, drooping right eyelid. He also had an exceptionally large mane with a black widow’s peak. It is estimated that he weighed somewhere between 420 and 550 pounds.

Before his death from old age and starvation in 2021, he was beloved by people around the world. After watching him dominate the reserve on wildlife shows such as Wildlife Quest Lions: In Search of Scarface and the BBC’s Big Cats Diary, tourists flocked to Kenya to see him in person. Scarface was so famous that he even had a dedicated Facebook page.

Masai Mara

Scarface’s territory is one of the most well-known safari locations in East Africa. The Masai Mara National Reserve and Conservancies span 580 square miles of African savanna plains and rolling hills, bordering the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the south.

The entire area is an unfenced reserve comprised of multiple conservancy areas managed by local county councils. It was officially established in 1961. Over the years, it was expanded to cover areas used by large numbers of animals as wildlife corridors from the Serengeti to the Mara. In 1974, the area received National Reserve status.

How Old Do Lions Typically Get?

Lions rule the land. They are apex predators and feared by other animals and people alike. So many people would assume they live for a long time. Unfortunately, they do not. Even predators face dangers, including from their own kind. That means a lion’s lifespan is highly unpredictable. However, one thing is certain. Lions in captivity tend to far outlive lions in the wild.

Lions living in the wild also differ in their life span depending on whether they’re male or female. If a lion survives diseases, hunting, poaching, starvation, and battles over territory, it may live to between 10 and 14 years old. Females tend to be on the higher end of that scale, with males falling slightly short of the top age.

Experts also estimate that only one out of every eight lion cubs makes it to adulthood. So those that make it to 10 years old have already lived an impressive and full life. That Scarface lived to reach 14 years old is nothing short of incredible.

If a lion survives into adulthood in the wild, it may live to be anywhere from 10 to 14 years old.

Are the Stories About Scarface True?

There are many wild stories about Scarface circulating online. Viral stories claimed Scarface killed over 130 rival lions and his pride killed nearly 400 hyenas. Conservationists and other wildlife experts note that these large kill counts are not documented facts, but unverified legends and estimates. However, Scarface was a true lion king, as his long rule proclaims.

It is well documented that Scarface and his brothers dominated a massive amount of territory along the Mara River flowing through the southwestern part of the reserve. He and his brothers, the Four Musketeers, took control of the Marsh Pride in 2011-2012. They subsequently controlled the Marsh Pride and the Paradise Pride, also protected by the coalition, for nearly a decade. Most male lions only dominate a pride for 2-4 years before being replaced.

In the end, Scarface was not taken down by a rival or another predator. Instead, he walked over 15 miles to return to his native territory. Scarface died a peaceful death lying under a tree, while staff from the Mara Predator Conservation Programme watched over him.
