Quick Take

When a lot of people think about wolves, they may think of them just like they would a dog. However, while the Twilight Saga might have exaggerated how big wolves, the ancestors of man’s best friend is, wolves are surprisingly bigger than many people think. But how big are they exactly? We’ve created this wolf size comparison guide to give you a better idea of how their size compares to other canines and humans.

Types of Wolves and Their Sizes

Wolves are primarily found in North America, Asia, and Europe. Wolf taxonomy is complicated and frequently under debate, but there are two widely recognized species of wolf: the grey wolf (Canis lupus) and the red wolf (Canis rufus). There are many subspecies of grey wolves, but the exact number depends on the taxonomic authority. There are no subspecies of the red wolf. Take an in-depth look at the sizes of grey and red wolves below.

Grey Wolves

Grey wolves can range anywhere from 40 to 175 pounds. The largest grey wolves are the Northwestern wolves (Canis lupus occidentalis), also known as Mackenzie Valley wolves and Alaskan timber wolves. They can measure nearly 7 feet in length from the nose to the tip of the tail. They stand up to 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 175 pounds, with reports of some individuals in the Yukon weighing even more. These wolves inhabit the northwestern continental United States, Alaska, and western Canada.

Adult male Great Danes can also reach similar sizes, weighing up to 175 pounds. However, they are slightly shorter on average at around 32 inches at the shoulder. Of course, some individuals may grow larger. The world record holder, a dog named Zeus, stood 3.67 feet at the shoulder and measured 7 feet 4 inches tall when standing on his hind legs. The average dire wolf is also thought to have been about the size of the largest Northwestern wolves.

The smallest grey wolf subspecies in the world is the Arabian wolf (Canis lupus arabs). At its full adult size, it weighs 30-45 pounds. They measure up to 5.25 feet from the nose to the tip of the tail and stand about 25 inches at the shoulders. These wolves are similar in size to Border Collies, which stand up to 22 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 30 and 55 pounds.

The Arabian wolf is the smallest grey wolf species, weighing only up to 45 pounds.

Red Wolves

The red wolf is native to the southeastern U.S., but is now only found in a small area in northeastern North Carolina. Red wolves tend to be smaller than grey wolves, weighing 45-80 pounds. These wolves measure up to 4 feet in length and stand about 26 inches at the shoulder.

Red wolves are the same colors as coyotes, with combinations of brown, tan, buff, grey, and reddish-brown, but they are taller, longer, and heavier. Coyotes only measure around 3 feet long, stand 22 inches at the shoulder, and weigh 20-35 pounds. Red wolves are around the size of German shepherd dogs. Male German shepherds can reach up to 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh 65-90 pounds, while females can stand up to 24 inches and weigh 50-70 pounds.

The red wolf is a canine native to the southeastern United States which has a reddish-tawny color to its fur.

Red wolves can get much larger than coyotes, weighing up to 80 pounds.

    Wolf vs. Human Size Comparison

Did you know wolf attacks on humans are some of the rarest among all top predators? Even wild sightings are rare because of how wary wolves are of humans. However, if you were to come across a wolf by chance, how do you think you’d measure up against them?

The mean waist height for the average adult female is 3 feet and 5 inches and for males it is around 3 feet and 8 inches. The shoulder height of the largest wolf species is around 3 feet. So that would put a wolf’s shoulders at around mid-thigh to hip height. If a wolf were to stand on its hind legs, it is estimated to measure between 5-7 feet. They would likely be able to rest their front paws on your shoulder and be at eye level with you, depending on the species and your height.

According to the CDC, the average human male weighs 199 pounds, while the average female weighs 171.8. Most male grey wolves only weigh up to around 145 pounds, while the heaviest of wolves weigh up to 175 pounds. That means a large percentage of adult humans would outweigh most wolves.
