While green isn’t an unusual color in nature, beautiful green animals are somewhat rare and exotic. Many green-colored animals, such as toads and various insects, have little to distinguish them besides their green color. The only mammal that can be considered green, the brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) of South America, is not visually pleasing. Besides, the green in its fur comes not from natural pigment but from algae growing on it. Fortunately, there are enough beautiful green animals to fill this list. Continue reading to learn about 10 of them.

10. Emerald Tree Boa

A beautiful green animal, the emerald tree boa, is draped around a branch with multiple coils showing.

The emerald tree boa (Corallus caninus) is a species of non-venomous but aggressive boas. Unlike many other boas, they do not make good pets. They are great hunters, and their prehensile tail allows them to coil around tree branches and wait for the right moment to strike. They have a large-sized heat sensor that helps them detect prey easily. Generally, they grow to around 4 to 6 feet long; however, 9-foot boas have been seen in the Amazon basin.

This beautiful snake gets its name from the brilliant green of its scales. Its entire body is green with white and yellow markings that create a lovely contrast. Its coloration helps it hide from prey like birds and rodents, and its serious predator, the Guianan crested eagle (Morphnus guianensis). The emerald tree boa is native to northern South America. Interestingly, baby emerald tree boas are often born in a variety of colors, but they become the usual green by the time they’re a year old.

9. Red-Eyed Tree Frog

The red-eyed tree frog, sitting on a leaf, is a green animal found in Central America.

The red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) is a species of tree-dwelling frog found in the neotropical lowlands of Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. These frogs are delicate and do not like being touched. They are nocturnal, and as pets, they need special care in the form of a specially designed terrarium and heat to thrive.

It has bulging blood-red eyes that contrast beautifully with its grass-green body. It has areas of blue on its legs and blue and yellow stripes along its sides. The pads of its toes are orange. The red-eyed tree frog is unique in that it is completely terrestrial; however, like most amphibians, it needs to stay near water. Females, who are larger than males, lay their eggs on leaves above a body of water. The red-eyed tree frog is a little animal of 1.5 to 2.25 inches in length.

8. Luna Moth

The luna moth, a beautiful green animal, only lives for a week to reproduce.

The luna moth (Actias luna) has large, gorgeous wings of light green. The wingspan ranges between 3 to 4.25 inches, and the hindwings have long tails. Both pairs of wings have eyespots, and the moth’s body is furry. They are seldom seen by humans as they are nocturnal, and their green coloring gives them ample camouflage.

Luna moths only live for seven to ten days. During their brief lives, their only purpose is to procreate; because of this, they do not eat anything. Females lay as many as 200 eggs on leaves of trees such as persimmon and birch over a few days, then die.

7. Green Mambas

Green mambas are some of the most venomous snakes on earth, but their sleek, green bodies make them some of the most beautiful beasts. There are three species: the eastern green mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps), the western green mamba (Dendroaspis viridis), and Jameson’s mamba (Dendroaspis jamesoni). All of them live in the trees and, despite the lethality of their venom, are shy creatures.

Jameson’s mamba, native to equatorial Africa, can grow to over 7 feet long and has green upper scales, dramatically edged with black. It eats mostly small mammals and birds and has two subspecies. The black-tailed Jameson’s mamba (Dendroaspis jamesoni kaimosae) is considered the most lethal.

The Eastern green mamba is slightly shorter than Jameson’s mamba and lives along the coast of East Africa. It is a thin snake of brilliant green above and yellowish-green below. An ambush predator, it waits for prey to pass by, then strikes. Its venom makes short work of any small animal. The snake waits a few minutes for it to become immobile or to die, then swallows it whole.

The Western green mamba is found in West Africa. It can grow even larger than the other two species, with some reaching 8 feet in length. The head of this snake has a sort of ridge above the eyes, and it can flatten its neck like a cobra’s hood when agitated.

Amazon parrots (Amazona spp.) are green, with areas of brilliant reds, blues, and yellows. These parrots are medium-sized, approximately 10 to 18 inches long, and have short tails. They are found in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central and South America. Some of them have escaped captivity and formed feral flocks in Florida and parts of Europe. Several Amazon parrot species are threatened or endangered due to habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade, while others remain relatively stable.

The glorious scarab (Chrysina gloriosa) is one of the jewel scarabs, named because their carapaces glow like gems or precious metal. In the case of this scarab, its deep jade green elytra, which are the hard wings that cover and protect the wings beneath, are striped with silver. The iridescent colors are caused by light striking the chitin molecules that make up the carapaces of most insects.

The glorious scarab is approximately an inch long and eats the leaves of juniper trees. This colorful beetle is found in Mexico and the southwestern United States.

4. Wellington Green Gecko

The Wellington green gecko is endemic to New Zealand’s North Island, where it is wonderfully camouflaged among the trees. There, it preys on flies and moths. It has a green body with rows of white dots, and the inside of its mouth is blue. It flashes its blue mouth to startle would-be predators and is also known to bark.

The Wellington green gecko’s snout-to-vent length is 2.95 to 3.74 inches, and its tail is even longer. It’s also an amazingly long-lived reptile and can live up to 45 years. Its Māori name is Moko kākāriki.

3. Orange-lined Triggerfish

Beautiful Green Animals - Undulate Triggerfish

An orange-lined triggerfish or undulate triggerfish is a beautiful green animal.

The compressed green body of the orange-lined triggerfish (Balistapus undulatus) is marked with contrasting orange lines. While resting, the green darkens. Like all triggerfish, it has a tiny mouth with powerful teeth and derives its name from the spines in its dorsal fin. In the wild, it eats anything it can tackle, including sea urchins, mussels, bits of coral, and algae. It will even take bites out of other fish. This beautiful triggerfish is often kept as a pet, but it is so aggressive that it must be kept by itself in a large tank. It will attack any other living creature in its vicinity.

2. Sea Sheep

Sea sheep (Costasiella kuroshimae) look like plants, but they are animals. They are 0.2 to 0.39 inches long and have tiny eyes and rhinophores on their heads that some say look like sheep’s ears, hence the animal’s common name. The rhinophores help the sea slug find food by picking up chemical signals. They are one of the few animals that photosynthesize. This is because they eat algae and use the chloroplasts from the algae to obtain energy from the sun. It’s also why they’re green. Sea sheep also have cerata, which are green, leaf-like appendages that bear red or pink spots. This sea slug is found in the waters off Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

1. Green Peafowl

Beautiful Green Animals - Green Peacock

One of the most beautiful birds, the green peafowl (Pavo muticus), is endangered due to the loss of its tropical forest habitat in Southeast Asia. It differs from the more blue Indian peafowl in that both sexes have long covert feathers, though only the male’s covert feathers have the famous eyespots. Males only keep their long train during the breeding season, and once it is over, it is hard to distinguish them from the females.

The green peafowl’s breast and neck glitter green and resemble sequins. The male’s lesser covert feathers are also green and make a triangle on its shoulders when the bird is resting. Green peafowls can be huge birds, and the male, with its coverts, can be almost 10 feet long. Despite the long train, the peafowl is a strong flyer.
