The post linked above was uploaded by The Sloth Institute, a conservation group located in Manual Antonio, Costa Rica. This admirable group works with injured sloths in their rescue, rehabilitation, and release. During the rehabilitation of sloths, they also conduct research to support conservation and education programs, aiding in the animals’ survival.
Thanks to their efforts, 510 sloths have been rescued, and roughly 900 sloth-loving trees have been planted. One example of their work is Elsa, a sloth they took in for rehabilitation. Since then, Elsa has given birth to two sloth babies. In the video above, her baby, Glacier, is hanging onto her head in a cute display. Thanks to the group’s efforts, the mother-and-child duo can thrive.
Sloth babies instinctively cling to their mothers during the early stages of life, which helps them learn how to survive. They use their sharp claws to grasp tightly onto their mother’s chest or belly, sometimes moving to her back as they grow older to ensure a secure grip. This is what is shown in the video above!
Sloths cling to their mothers for several main reasons: protection, conserving energy, and learning. Because sloth babies are so vulnerable, staying with their mothers keeps them safe. Additionally, since the babies lack the energy to move around on their own, being carried by their mother is essential. Finally, by observing their mother—such as what leaves she eats and how she climbs—the baby learns important survival skills for adulthood.
