With so many different sea creatures in the ocean, conflicts between species are inevitable. One common battle often occurs between octopuses and crabs. Octopuses prey on crabs and have developed many different hunting techniques. Crabs don’t just sit by, though; they have their own means of defense. This video by OKY UNDERWATER shows one of these battles happening in close detail. Read here to learn more about these rivals.

Octopuses are extremely smart.
Octopus Anatomy
With eight arms and an intelligent brain, octopuses are formidable opponents in the water. Their large and complex brains mean that they are extremely smart. One noticeable trait is their problem-solving abilities. When faced with a difficult task, such as fighting a crab, they can devise various tactics to attack. A crab’s hard shell is difficult to break through, so the octopus uses the suckers on its arms to partially immobilize the crab. It is crucial for the octopus to restrain the crab’s claws. They use their sharp beak, located at the center of their arms, to tear apart the crab’s shell. As seen in the video, some octopus species can inject venom through their beaks, completely immobilizing their prey. By using all of their features to their advantage, octopuses are amazing hunters!

Crab Anatomy
One of the most obvious means of defense for a crab is their hard shell. When comparing the abilities of crabs and octopuses, crabs are less likely to win. This is partly due to their limited range of motion compared to octopuses. Thankfully, with their exoskeleton, they can defend against most attacks. Additionally, their front claws are powerful and can inflict painful wounds, helping to protect them from predators. So, while their attacks may not be as dramatic as those of an octopus, crabs should not be underestimated.
Who Wins?
So, who usually wins? In most cases, octopuses come out on top in these encounters. While crabs have a strong defense, it often fails against the intelligence and dexterity of an octopus. As seen in the video, the octopus was able to subdue its prey in just seven minutes and used both venom and its tentacles to win. The octopus’s intelligence and physical abilities give it a clear advantage over the crab, making it difficult for crabs to defend themselves. Crabs may have a chance if they can catch the octopus with their claws, but the octopus’s stealth makes this difficult. This natural rivalry is fascinating to observe and highlights the incredible diversity of life in the ocean.
