There’s a reason why bovine therapy is rising in popularity, and it’s because of just how cute cows are. While the standard cow may look friendly, some breeds can be quite intimidating. About the Belgian Blue Cow
The Belgian Blue is a breed of cattle native to Belgium. One of the defining features of this breed is its heavy musculature. Originally bred in the late 19th century, farmers wanted cattle that could produce both milk and meat for consumption. By the mid-20th century, through selective breeding, these animals became a reality, and to this day, the Belgian Blue is a special beef breed. They are not just found in Belgium; they can also be found on farms throughout Europe, the Americas, Africa, and elsewhere. So, how and why do they get so muscular?
The main answer is due to a genetic condition affecting muscle growth. Muscular hypertrophy is an increase in muscle size and thickness, typically driven by resistance training and increased physical demand, though in this case the genetic mutation prevents the normal limiting of muscle growth rather than exercise causing it. Instead, the main culprit for their massive muscles is the protein myostatin. While this protein normally limits the development of skeletal muscle, the genetic condition interferes with its function. So simply put, for Belgian Blues, muscle development has broken the brakes.
We live in a time of GMOs, but Belgian Blues are a result of selective breeding. Rather than artificially inducing this mutation, farmers bred the most muscular cows together over generations to develop the breed we have today. Although their muscles grow to enormous sizes, there is a limit to their growth. A typical Belgian Blue bull grows to around 2,400 to 2,800 pounds and can stand up to five feet tall at the withers. For perspective, a bull can weigh about half a ton more than an average car, while standing at roughly the same height as the average person. As stated before, Belgian Blues are bred primarily for beef today. They produce a large amount of lean meat, making them desirable for farmers.
