There are roughly 8,000 species of frogs and toads, each with its own unique appearance and traits. The Pacman frog, which gets its nickname from its resemblance to the round character, grows large and bulbous. This Instagram reel by @bumo_chan shows a large Pacman frog that looks as flat as a hamburger. Read here to learn more.

Pacman frogs are very low-maintenance pets, and their unique appearance has made them quite popular.

About Pacman Frogs

Pacman frogs are comically round, as seen in the reel above. The scientific name of the genus is Ceratophytes, and it means “horned brow,” referencing its horn-like structure protruding above the eyes. They are native to South America, with different species inhabiting different regions. While the exact species of frog in the video above is unknown, it likely originates from Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, or Bolivia. In nature, Pacman frogs can be found in grasslands, marshes, and other humid areas. They spend much of their time partially buried in the soft soil as part of their hunting style. Rather than actively seeking out prey, they sit motionless and ambush any prey that comes too close. Their diet includes worms, insects, lizards, other frogs, and even small rodents.

Pacman frogs are commonly kept as pets. They are relatively low-maintenance and can be hardy when cared for properly. Popular species include Ceratophyrs cranwelli and Ceratophyrs ornata. Breeders have developed unique color variants that are brighter and more vibrant. Since these frogs are solitary, they don’t require socialization and prefer not to be held. They are also relatively inactive, meaning they don’t need tons of room for exercise. One of the best parts of their low-maintenance lifestyle is their feeding schedule. Adults only need to eat roughly one to two times a week! The most demanding tasks for Pacman frog owners are occasionally cleaning the tank and monitoring temperatures. If you’re in the market for an easy-to-care-for amphibian that doesn’t need 24/7 attention, the Pacman frog may be right for you.
