How Big Is a Bernedoodle?

Standard poodles and Bernese mountain dogs are both considered medium to large-sized dogs. So it comes as no surprise to learn that Bernedoodles take after both parents. However, their exact size depends on just what kind of poodle mix they are. They may have purebred parents, or they could be the offspring of other Bernedoodles. Like poodles, Bernedoodles come in several size variations. Bernedoodles typically come in standard, medium, miniature, and micro variations.

Bernedoodle Sizes

The standard Bernedoodle is the largest variety. These lovable poodle-mixes can weigh anywhere from 70 to 90 pounds, and they typically grow to measure 23 to 29 inches at the shoulder. So, it’s easy to see how they take after their Bernese mountain dog parent, especially because purebred Bernese mountain dogs can weigh up to 115 pounds.

Medium Bernedoodles are slightly smaller, though they’re still considered one of the larger designer mixes currently popular. They grow to a height of around 18 to 21 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 35 and 50 pounds.

Miniature Bernedoodles reach between 14 and 17 inches at the shoulder. They generally weigh between 25 and 35 pounds.

Lastly, the micro Bernedoodle is the smallest of the bunch. At less than 15 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 10 and 25 pounds, they can grow larger than many small or toy breeds, such as Chihuahuas. However, micro Bernedoodles are still relatively small in comparison to the Bernese Mountain Dog.

Even the largest Bernedoodle is only a little bit taller than the average adult human’s knee. At 29 inches at the shoulder, standard Bernedoodles are around the same size as the average one-year-old child, although they can weigh as much as the average thirteen-year-old.

Micro Bernedoodles, however, are the perfect size to get under your feet. At a maximum of 15 inches at the shoulder, they’ll come to around your mid-calf, though they can be even smaller. Bernedoodle vs. Golden Retriever

Like their Bernese mountain dog parents, standard Bernedoodles can grow much taller than golden retrievers — around 5 inches taller. That’s roughly the height of a soda can. However, in the case of the medium Bernedoodle, these two lovable canines are closer in height. This is especially true for medium Bernedoodles and female golden retrievers, both of which can reach a maximum shoulder height of 22 inches.

A healthy adult golden retriever typically weighs 55 to 65 pounds (females) or 65 to 75 pounds (males). There is a 15-pound difference between a large male golden retriever and the standard Bernedoodle. However, a large male golden retriever is at least three times as heavy as a micro Bernedoodle. It is also nearly twice as tall.

Bernedoodle vs. Great Dane

Great Danes are known for being one of the largest dog breeds. In fact, the tallest dog to ever live was a Great Dane named Zeus, who measured 44 inches tall. Of course, most Great Danes are not as tall as Zeus, but they are still considerably larger than Bernedoodles.

The smallest Great Danes are the females, which grow to a shoulder height of around 28 to 32 inches and weigh between 110 and 140 pounds. This means that even the smallest Great Danes are about the same height as the largest Bernedoodle. However, the smallest female Great Dane would outweigh the largest Bernedoodle by 20 to 50 pounds.

Great Dane males can grow up to 34 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 175 pounds. So it would take seven of the largest micro Bernedoodles to equal the weight of a male Great Dane. It would take more than two micro Bernedoodles standing on top of each other to reach the same height. The largest standard Bernedoodle is closer to the Great Dane than its smaller counterparts. However, it’s still at least 5 inches shorter and 85 to 100 pounds lighter.

Bernedoodle vs. Greyhound

Greyhounds are famous for their unmatched speed and top-rated agility. They are considered a large dog breed due to their size. The males can grow up to 30 inches in height, but the largest individuals typically only weigh around 80 pounds.

When greyhounds are compared to Bernedoodles, you’ll find that these two breeds are similar in height. When it comes to height, the tallest standard Bernedoodles are just an inch shorter than the tallest greyhounds. However, a greyhound is twice as tall as a micro Bernedoodle.
