Exotic animals might look fascinating online, but owning them in the United States isn’t always legal. Laws vary widely by state and even by city, with strict regulations in place to protect both people and wildlife. While some animals like parrots and certain reptiles can be kept as pets with proper permits, others, including big cats, primates, and large predators, are heavily restricted or outright banned in many areas.
These laws exist for good reason. Many exotic animals require specialized care, pose safety risks, or can harm local ecosystems if released or escaped. In this slideshow, we’ll take a closer look at animals that are illegal to own in parts of the U.S. and explain why these restrictions are in place.
