Dogs have been by our side for thousands of years, but some breeds trace their origins back far earlier than most people realize. While it’s impossible to pinpoint the exact “first” dog breed, genetic and archaeological evidence shows that certain breeds have ancient lineages that date back thousands of years, closely resembling some of the earliest domesticated dogs.

From primitive hunting companions to early working dogs, these breeds have changed remarkably little over time compared to modern breeds. In this slideshow, we’ll explore some of the oldest dog breeds in the world, including one with roots that may stretch back as far as 10,000 years, and uncover what makes these ancient canines so unique.
