Touch-Me-Not Balsam
The touch-me-not balsam, scientifically known as Impatiens noli-tangere, is a plant native to much of Europe and parts of Asia. These plants grow in damp environments, such as by streams or lakes. You can also find them in woodlands that have moist soil. Their explosive nature is what gives them their nickname. The seeds of the touch-me-not balsam are known as “explosive seeds.” As part of the plant’s reproduction, the seeds need to be dispersed. For this plant, a simple touch will trigger the seed pod to launch its seeds in all directions. When the netted carpet moth caterpillar is involved, you end up with flying caterpillars, as shown in the video above.
The netted carpet moth caterpillar feeds on the balsam, meaning it somewhat assists in the plant’s life cycle. The larva feeds on the leaves and seed pods of the plant, often triggering the explosive seed dispersal. As the pod builds up pressure from humidity and moisture, even the lightest touch from a small caterpillar is enough to set it off. While both the caterpillar and the plant benefit from this interaction, it can be dangerous for the caterpillar. The quick explosion launches the caterpillar, sending it flying to the ground. These falls can be dangerous, but the caterpillar will keep going back as it enjoys feeding on these plants. This is a perfect example of a relationship between different species that rely on each other for survival.
