What is Murmuration?
Before explaining the process of murmuration, let’s discuss which birds practice it. The common starling, known scientifically as Sturnus vulgaris, is most often observed engaging in this display. Native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, these birds have since thrived across the world thanks to their adaptability to both rural and urban areas. These extremely social birds roost in large groups, as shown in the Instagram video. Famous for their mimicry, these birds are able to imitate humans, mechanical noises, and other birds. Using their complex communication of whistles, clicks, and songs, they coordinate as a group to create beautiful murmuration displays.
Murmuration is a phenomenon that occurs before roosting. It involves spinning, swirling, twisting, and swooping through the sky as a large group, collectively creating abstract shapes in the sky. One of the most amazing parts of this act is the fluidity with which the shapes ebb and flow. Because the group lacks any one designated leader, the birds seem to move like water. The word “murmuration” comes from the sound of the birds’ wings beating together, almost like a murmur. Starlings engage in this behavior at dusk, as seen in the video, particularly in the fall and winter when they gather in mass numbers at a roost site for safety and warmth. By sticking together in a large group, they can fend off predators more easily. This beautiful display shows just how amazing these birds are!
