The coyote (Canis latrans) is a highly adaptable member of the canine family, native to North America and closely related to both wolves and domestic dogs. Once found primarily in open plains and deserts, coyotes have dramatically expanded their range and now thrive across nearly every habitat on the continent, from rural farmlands and dense forests to suburban neighborhoods and even major cities.
Unlike many other large predators, coyotes have flourished despite human expansion. Their resourcefulness and flexible diet allow them to survive in environments altered by people, feeding on everything from small mammals and birds to fruits, insects, and human trash. They’ve learned to navigate urban spaces with remarkable skill, often hunting under cover of darkness to avoid people.
Today, coyotes are among the most widespread and successful wild mammals in North America. Rather than facing extinction, their population is growing, a testament to their extraordinary ability to adapt and coexist with human civilization.
When it comes to the United States, how many coyotes are there? We looked at all 50 states to determine population numbers; we’ve excluded states where data were unavailable (Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, and South Carolina).

Coyote Diet

©Sandyjim/Shutterstock.com
Because coyotes are primarily carnivores, they can also survive on an omnivorous diet. They eat a lot of rodents and other small animals that can otherwise be invasive. Apart from rodents, they also eat rabbits, birds, squirrels, fruit, grass, deer, and insects. Although they love these food sources, they also can be a nuisance to farm owners. This is mostly because they love eating livestock including chickens.
