The adorable, adaptable, pug is an excellent family pet!

Among the multitude of dog breeds out there, there’s one that stands out for its unique blend of charm, adaptability, and affection — the pug! Renowned for their distinctive looks and unshakeable sense of humor, these little dogs carry a giant personality.

In this article, we’ll be breaking down the top ten reasons why a pug could be an incredible addition to your family. We aim to show you why these companions could be the answer to your search for the perfect family dog, highlighting their endearing qualities and practical benefits. So, get ready to dive into the heartwarming world of pugs and discover what makes the breed so uniquely wonderful.

1. Pugs Are Excellent With Children

A standout quality of pugs is just how friendly they are. Naturally curious, the breed is affectionate and playful. This combination of characteristics makes the breed a perfect family dog in homes with small children. Because pugs aren’t large in stature, they pose very little risk of playing too rough with the little ones. Inversely, pugs are quite sturdily built, which means you won’t have to worry about your little one playing too rough with the dog.

Even scientifically, pugs are seen as an ideal breed for small children. Firstly, they sleep more than other dog breeds, with an average of about 14 hours per day. That means that when it comes around to nap time, you won’t worry about your pug keeping the kids awake or riled up. The size and shape of a pug’s mouth make it far more difficult for pugs to bite, too. Even with their already docile temperament, the extra reassurance never hurts!

2. Perfect for Busy Households

Not only do pugs get along well with small children- they also get along just fine on their own. Though pugs are naturally social as a breed and enjoy having company whenever possible, they aren’t high maintenance enough to need constant attention. As briefly touched upon in the last section, pugs sleep a lot. Like, over half of the day.

Because of this, you don’t necessarily have to worry about being gone for extended hours during the day, or not taking your pug out on long walks. In fact, pugs actually only need about 20 minutes of exercise every day. This being said, make sure they do get that 20 minutes. Pugs have a bit of a predisposition for obesity due to their combined love for eating and love for rest. If you’re someone with a busy schedule who still wants to adopt a pet, a pug could be the perfect family dog for you.

3. A Breed As Intelligent as It Is Stubborn

When you think about pugs, the words that come to your head are probably ones like ‘silly’ and ‘goofy,’ not necessarily ‘intelligent.’ However, despite their fun-loving demeanor, pugs are quite the smart cookies. They’re quick learners and have a remarkable ability to pick up on human emotions and body language, which makes them adaptable to their family’s lifestyle and routines. But let’s not forget, along with this intelligence comes a healthy dose of stubbornness!

Much like the class clown who’s also a secret scholar, pugs often surprise their owners with their clever little schemes. They quickly figure out how to open that cabinet door you thought was secure or discover that one spot on the couch that’s just out of your sight when they’re supposed to be resting on the floor. Their capacity for problem-solving can be astonishing and may keep you on your toes, trying to stay one step ahead in the game.

Pugs are also experts at reading your mood and seem to know exactly when to snuggle up quietly beside you or when to initiate a playful game to lift your spirits. This ability to connect with their human family on an emotional level is a testament to their intelligence and is part of what makes them such endearing pets.

4. Their Life Expectancy Is High

When choosing the perfect family dog, life expectancy is something that unfortunately needs to be taken into consideration. The fact is, some dog breeds don’t live very long. While pugs have a moderate lifespan, typically between 12 to 15 years, certain breeds have much shorter lives. For instance, the Bernese Mountain Dog, despite its popularity, has a relatively short average lifespan of 6 to 8 years.

Because of their long lives, you have the opportunity to make many more memories with these furry friends. Though all dogs deserve loving lives regardless of breed, you will ultimately cultivate a deeper relationship with a dog with a longer life expectancy. Especially if your family has children, who can then grow up alongside their beloved childhood pet.

5. Pugs Are Tiny And Tough

A common misconception about small dogs is that you can’t properly play with them. Though pugs might be short-statured, that doesn’t mean they can’t handle a serious bout of playtime. The beautiful thing about pugs is that, among other things, they are versatile. You can roughhouse them a bit, and stick them into your purse right after.

So, despite their tiny nature (most growing to only about 13 inches in height), pugs are a force to be reckoned with! Just because you can dress them up in tiny outfits doesn’t mean they don’t want to be played with.

6. Your Pug Is Adaptable

Because of their adaptability and small size, pugs are an excellent choice of dog for families living in cities.

As we mentioned earlier in the article, a pug doesn’t need a mansion to roam around in if it wants to be happy and healthy. As long as it has the essentials and at least a solid living area to run around in, there’s no need to jog it across the countryside each day. In fact, pugs are an excellent choice for inner-city apartment living.

Not every family lives in a suburb, and that’s okay. Just because you don’t lead a conventional lifestyle doesn’t mean you don’t deserve the perfect family dog. Pugs are happy wherever their family is, without much preference for the great outdoors or an urban jungle. If you give them love and care each day, they are guaranteed to be more than pleased.

7. They Frequently Get Along With Other Furry Friends

In the constantly varying landscape of a family home, it’s not uncommon to have more than one pet. If you’re thinking about adding a pug to your multi-pet household, you’ll be pleased to learn about their natural affinity for making friends of all species. Pugs are known to get along splendidly with other animals, thanks to their congenial nature.

Although they carry a playful spirit, pugs aren’t overly energetic, reducing the likelihood of them overwhelming or intimidating other pets in the household. Their relaxed approach to life often results in peaceful coexistence with pets of various temperaments, from the laid-back elderly cat to the excitable puppy.

This being said, it’s important to know that each pug is different and will have different preferences. Pugs might be naturally inclined to be trusting of other animals, but not all pugs have had easy lives or experiences. If you’re adopting a pug from a shelter or rescue, be sure to learn all of its history and potential trauma before doing any kind of interspecies introductions.

8. You Can Take Them on a Trip

With all of the characteristics we’ve described- laid-back, peaceful, friendly – it’s hard to imagine your pug anywhere besides on a vacation! In fact, the way that pugs present themselves most of the time is how humans present themselves on a restful break. Because of this perfect demeanor, in addition to their compact size, pugs are ideal pets to take on family trips.

There are many reasons why your family might go on frequent journies. It could be something leisurely, sure, but there are also families that are on the move for work-related reasons. When you live that kind of lifestyle, it can feel difficult to leave your pet at home during these trips. That’s why a pug, a dog that loves excitement and leisure all the same, could be the perfect family dog for those who are always on the go. Just know that some airline carriers don’t allow pugs and other snub-nosed animals aren’t allowed by, so you may have to look for an airline that allows them or opt for road trips.

9. Pugs Aren’t Big on Barking

There is a common misconception that pugs simply do not bark. Some think that, like the Basenji, the breed doesn’t have the capacity to make the sound. This is, unfortunately, not the case. Still, though, that rumor emerged from somewhere, and it’s likely because pugs don’t bark nearly as much as their counterparts!

More often than not, you might hear an array of ‘yips’ as opposed to standard barking. This is excellent for families that have small children because the barking of a pug is much less harsh to the ear than other breeds. It is less high-pitched and generally quieter. When a pug does bark, they do so for good reason.

Incredibly loyal, pugs will only bark when they feel threatened, worried, or otherwise paranoid. If there’s a stranger entering the home, for instance, it’s likely that your pug will begin emitting sound. This can be a good thing, too, because it can alert you if someone is trying to break in or if there is suspicious activity happening outside of your home.

10. They’re Just Too Cute!

Though this one is a bit more opinionated than the rest, it can be universally agreed that the physical features of a pug are, if nothing else, unique. Their squished little faces are incredibly lovable to many, a distinctive appearance that few other breeds can compare to. In addition, their bulging eyes are also considered quite cute by those who own pugs.

Of course, one would be remiss not to mention the adorably curly tails that pugs possess. All of these individual features work together to make the pug so wonderful, and those who have had the pleasure of owning one couldn’t be more grateful for their tiny bundles of joy!
