What to Know Before Naming Your Cat

Picking your cat’s new name is an important process that takes time and research.

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” While names may be just that—names—in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, your cat’s name can carry some weight to it. This is because your cat’s name goes beyond being a word you call them: it’s one of your primary forms of communication with your pet.

Whether you’re warning them from unsafe areas or places they’re not supposed to be, or you’re trying to call your cat near to spend time with them, you’ll often default to calling their name. Your cat will learn its name over time, and while they may not always respond to it, they will understand what it means.

As a result, you’ll want to pick an easy-to-understand name to help your cat learn what this human word means to them. First, you’ll want to make sure you choose a unique name for your household. Names that sound too similar between pets or humans, such as Noah and Nora, can make it hard for your cat to discern who you’re talking to.

You’ll also want to avoid names that sound like commands. While you may not always spend time training your cat in a way that you would a dog, you don’t want them to get their name confused with basic tricks or commands. This means avoiding names like Kit, which can resemble “sit.”
