The weather in Yellowstone during the month of January is particularly cold and snowy. You can expect the average temperature to be anywhere from 25 degrees Fahrenheit to 1 degree Fahrenheit on average, and for there to be snow on the ground for the majority of the month.

Attendance at Yellowstone National Park declines greatly during this time of year, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. We’ve already discussed the primary reason to visit during an off time of year, and that is simply to avoid the crowds and reconnect with nature without there being throngs of people surrounding you. 

With fewer people comes greater opportunities, including lodging availability and reservation options for a variety of other activities. Because Yellowstone operates year-round, you can expect there to still be a number of things to do in the park despite there being fewer visitors, but we’ll get back to that in a moment.

Besides the cold weather, the main drawback of visiting Yellowstone in January has to be the fact that most of the roads are closed to residential vehicles. This means that it can be extremely difficult to get around if you are in your own vehicle, though guided tours and opportunities to explore the park are available through Yellowstone National Park reservations. 

However, snow still means difficulties traversing the parts, including potential hikes and other natural experiences. You may find that certain hikes are unavailable during winter, depending on the weather. That’s why it’s always beneficial to call the park ahead of time or otherwise confirm what you might be expecting out of a January visit to Yellowstone.
