Snakes are among the most fear-inducing animals on Earth. From small, harmless species to massive constrictors, they often trigger fear in anyone with even a touch of ophidiophobia (the fear of snakes). For most people, the greatest concern is venomous snakes, which are responsible for the majority of snake-related human fatalities worldwide. Yet, there is another group of snakes that inspire awe and unease for a very different reason: their sheer size. These giant constrictors aren’t venomous, but their immense strength and bulk give them the rare ability not just to kill a human, but in exceptional cases, to swallow one whole.

This post was updated on September 11, 2025 to clarify average sizes, confirmed cases of human predation, the rarity of snakes consuming people, and diet descriptions.

Can Snakes Really Eat Humans?

As crazy as it sounds, there are a few species of snake in the world that are capable of eating humans. The vast majority of human snake deaths come from venomous species, but reports of a person being consumed by a snake are extraordinarily rare, with only a handful of confirmed cases in modern history. Still, it is possible. All potentially man-eating snakes must have one thing in common: immense size. In order for a snake to eat a human, it needs to be massive!

There are only two groups of snakes that grow to a size where they are able to both kill a human and eat them. These groups are boas and pythons. Pythons and boas are very similar, with both killing through constriction and encompassing certain species that can grow to immense sizes. Their differences are mostly physical and reproductive, with pythons laying eggs, while boas give birth to live young.

Four Snakes That Can Actually Eat a Human

Reticulated pythons are the longest snakes in the world.

The reticulated python is generally considered to be the longest snake in the entire world and is among the three heaviest. They are native to South and Southeast Asia and are hunted by humans for their beautifully patterned scales, from which they get their name. Although these snakes are dangerous, they are regularly sold as pets all over the world.

The largest reliably measured reticulated python was about 25 ft (7.67 m) in captivity. Large individuals in the wild usually grow to around 21 feet at a maximum and weigh close to 170 lbs.

There are many stories of reticulated pythons killing humans, with at least two of them being eaten afterward. One example details a slave woman in 1638 being killed and eaten on the island of Gunung Api. The snake was killed and taken back to camp, where the dead woman was cut out of the snake’s body. However, this account is cited in secondary sources only and not universally accepted as historically verified.

African rock pythons are known to eat some of the largest prey of any snake.

African rock pythons are among the largest snake species in the world, although they aren’t as long as reticulated pythons. These snakes live across most of Africa and are grouped into different subspecies, depending on where they live. The central African rock python is the largest subspecies and the one responsible for most of the dangerous interactions with humans. Deadly interactions with humans do occur, but they are extremely rare.

Rock pythons regularly reach 16–18 ft long, though 20+ ft specimens are possible. The largest snakes can weigh around 200 lbs and are able to take large prey like goats and some species of antelope.

While attacks on humans are very rare, there are a few confirmed fatalities, including a 2002 case in South Africa and a 2017 case in Indonesia involving a child. The most common examples of the snake actually feeding on humans usually involve children, although the largest members of the species could potentially eat a smaller adult.

Burmese python

Burmese pythons have been introduced into Florida, and they cause ecological damage.

Burmese pythons are well-known snakes, especially as their popularity as pets has grown over the years. They are found natively in Southeast Asia, especially Burma, where they get their name. In recent years, Burmese pythons have been introduced into the Everglades of Florida and have caused ecological problems ever since.

In the wild, Burmese pythons can easily grow to 16 feet, and several have been recorded over 18 ft. One in Kansas measured 20 ft in captivity.

While rare, there are documented cases of captive Burmese pythons killing and in at least one instance attempting to swallow humans. Based on their size, they definitely have the potential.

Green Anaconda

Green anacondas are the heaviest snakes in the world.

The green anaconda is potentially the most famous snake in the world. Movies and television shows have been made based on the myths surrounding the snake, although the vast majority of them are overblown. Green anacondas are native to South America and live in the warm, swampy regions across the continent. Of all the anaconda species, the green anaconda is the largest.

Green anacondas aren’t the longest snakes in the world, but they are the heaviest. Average lengths are 15–20 ft, with verified specimens around 22–23 ft. Folklore claims anacondas upwards of 30 feet, though these reports are unverified. On average, green anacondas weigh between 66 and 154 lbs, although the largest ones can exceed 200 lbs.

The sheer bulk and size of a green anaconda solidify them as a danger to humans. Still, despite their size, no confirmed instances of an anaconda killing and consuming a human existence. However, it is technically possible as they regularly consume capybaras and caimans.

Other Reptiles That Could Eat a Human

The Komodo dragon, a sizable lizard species, is the only living lizard known to occasionally kill humans. Most attacks are defensive; confirmed cases of devouring humans are rare.

In fact, according to researchers, humans are categorized as “super-predators,” as unlike other land predators such as lions, bears, and tigers that tend to hunt young prey for sustenance, humans have been observed to kill adult prey at a rate of 14 times higher than these animals, as per their analysis of a worldwide database of over 300 studies.

Additionally, the Nile crocodile and saltwater crocodile are the two species that are widely recognized for their tendency to hunt humans, and they are responsible for the majority of crocodilian attacks that result in both fatal and non-fatal outcomes.

While rare, it is not unheard of for alligators to consume humans, as some alligators have been discovered to have human remains in their digestive systems. American alligators have killed and consumed humans, though less frequently than Nile or saltwater crocodiles.

What is the Normal Diet of These Snakes?

African rock pythons eat a wide variety of foods, including whole antelope.

When it comes to the regular diets of various types of pythons and anacondas, there are some general similarities as well as differences.

The Reticulated Python is a carnivorous species that generally eats smaller mammals, birds, and lizards. Large individuals regularly take pigs, deer, and primates.

The African Rock Python is also a carnivore, but they are not as picky as the Reticulated Python when it comes to prey. They will feed on a wider range of animals, including rodents, small antelopes and gazelles, and even crocodiles and other reptiles.

The Burmese Python is an opportunistic feeder and will eat a wide variety of animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and amphibians.

The Green Anaconda is an ambush predator and feeds mainly on fish, birds, mammals, and reptiles. They have also been known to eat carrion, and they will sometimes feed on domestic livestock.
