Competitor #1: Tiger

Our first competitor, the tiger, loves eating meat. Waiting for the night to fall, tigers will roam the jungles, looking for unsuspecting animals to make a meal out of. Using their prowess, power, and super-long teeth, they’re excellent at catching prey.

Male tigers are typically bigger than females, and their long tail helps them maintain their balance. And when they’re not stalking their prey on land, tigers are more than happy to get in the water. Tigers have a 10 to 15 years lifespan when they’re not in captivity. In captivity, they can live much longer.

Research on Siberian tigers shows these cats as either falling into one of two personality categories. The personality types are “majesty” and “steadiness.”

Tigers with a steady mindset tend to be obedient, gentle, and calm. But tigers with the majesty mindset are more outgoing and have a higher social status. The majesty tigers even hunted more and had better overall health.

Sometimes jaguars are mistaken for leopards. But even though they look alike, they’re not the same species. There’s only one species of jaguar, Panthera onca. And the Panthera family includes several big cats, with jaguars being one of them.

The reason these big cats can look similar has to do with a condition called melanism, which turns their fur black. A coat condition deer sometimes have too.

One way to tell a leopard from a jaguar is by their size. Jaguars are bigger and more muscular than leopards.

Solitary Cat

Another thing jaguars have in common with tigers is their desire to be alone. These cats understand what “me time” is all about. As solitary animals, jaguars are mostly active at dawn and dusk — prime hunting times.

Jaguars have the strongest bite force among all cat species! That’s right; a jaguar bite is more powerful than a lion’s, tiger’s, or…well, you get the idea. Their strong jaw lets them deliver a bone-crushing bite allowing them to incapacitate their prey quickly. This biting power is especially helpful when a jaguar is dining on animals with shells or tough hides.

Another advantage the jaguar has is its ability to easily navigate through dense vegetation. Their compact muscular build makes moving through challenging terrain a breeze. Instead of making a bunch of noise as they travel, they can silently stalk their unsuspecting prey. A skill that’s allowed them to dine on a smorgasbord of creatures.
