Wild animals can be unpredictable. Although fatal wild animal attacks are rare, no one ever wants to be on the receiving end. This goes for mountain lions, bears, alligators, snakes, and coyotes. There is danger in every state in the United States, but don’t let this scare you from the outside. Just stay vigilant and respect nature if you come across these animals. Follow along to discover the deadliest and most dangerous animal in each U.S. state. Some animals make the list multiple times!

Alabama

Alabama is crawling with dangerous animals, including American alligators, cottonmouth snakes, and copperhead snakes. However, the most dangerous animal in Alabama is the black widow. Female black widow spider bites can cause chest pain, swelling, and nausea. Death can happen, but is more common in young children and the elderly. Bites are rare, with only a few thousand reported a year.

Alaska

Although Alaska has large animals like grizzly bears, polar bears, and moose, they aren’t the most dangerous animals in the state. The most dangerous and deadliest animals in Alaska are dogs! Alaska is the state with the highest fatality rate in dog attacks.

Arizona

Continuing our list of the deadliest and most dangerous animal in each U.S. state is the Western diamondback rattlesnake in Arizona. Although dangerous, don’t be too scared. Only 7,000–8,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes in the U.S., and not all are rattlesnakes.

Arkansas

Whitetail deer are the most dangerous and deadliest animal in Arkansas. There are about 1 million whitetail deer in the state. According to State Farm, there are about 22,000 vehicle and deer collisions every year in the state. That’s a lot!

California

The deadliest animals in California aren’t bears or sharks, but Southern Pacific rattlesnakes. These deadly animals rarely bite, but when they do, they can inject snake venom that causes pain, rashes, blisters, nausea, and vomiting.

Colorado

The chance of being attacked by a moose is slim, but there’s always a chance in Colorado. In Colorado, the most dangerous animal is moose. They are strong and heavy animals, growing up to 1,600 pounds.

Florida

Georgia

Georgia also has a lot of large and dangerous animals to choose from. However, the most dangerous animal in the state is the pygmy rattlesnake. While mortality rates are low, pygmy rattlesnake bites can cause swelling and loss of mobility. You can even lose your fingers!

Hawaii

Idaho

Illinois

In Illinois, one of the more dangerous animals is the coyote. However, coyotes mostly pose a threat to livestock and domestic pets like cats and dogs. Coyotes rarely attack humans preferring to fight smaller animals.

Indiana

Iowa

It’s hard to decide which animal is the deadliest or most dangerous in Iowa. However, surprisingly, wasps are one of the most deadliest animals in the state. Wasps can sting multiple times, although the stings rarely cause death. Wasp stings though are very dangerous for those who are allergic! Not everyone knows they are allergic though until it’s too late.

Louisiana

Louisiana has many deadly and dangerous animals, but which one is the most dangerous? The winner of this title is the eastern diamondback rattlesnake. It’s a venomous snake endemic to the Southeastern United States. Their bites can be fatal.

Maine

Moose are especially dangerous if you’re driving. Watch your surroundings as they sometimes cross roads or jump on highways unexpectedly.

Maryland isn’t home to many deadly animals. Interestingly though, bull sharks live in Maryland. Sightings are super uncommon! Bull sharks are very aggressive. Although known for their aggression and unique ability to live in freshwater, attacks, much less fatal, are rare.

Massachusetts

With so many dangerous animals, how do you choose just one? The deadliest and most dangerous animal in this state is the American black bear, although attacks are incredibly rare! However, there is always a chance. If you live in Massachusetts, maybe use a bear-proof trash can.

Michigan

In Michigan, you can see black bears, moose, venomous spiders, and more! Any of these animals can be considered dangerous, but the most dangerous animal in the state is the eastern massasauga rattlesnake. The eastern massasauga rattlesnake though is shy and rarely seen.

Minnesota

Minnesota’s deadliest and most dangerous animal is the coyote. While coyotes rarely attack humans, they can really harm, and even kill pets. They more commonly attack livestock. If you live in an area where there are coyotes, it’s best to not leave your cat or dog outside without supervision.

Mississippi

Mississippi has more than just a few deadly animals. You can find sharks, alligators, bears, snakes, spiders, and scorpions in the state! The winner of this title though is the cottonmouth snake. These aggressive venomous snakes are about 2 to 4 feet long.

Missouri

Montana

There are up to around 2,000 grizzly bears in Montana. While they are dangerous because of their size, grizzly bear attacks and encounters are uncommon.

Nebraska

Nebraska is a quiet state. Few animals can kill you. The deadliest and most dangerous animal in the state is the black widow spider. This spider delivers a powerful and painful bite, injecting venom. While you can die from a black widow spider bite, it’s rare. However, bites are uncomfortable and painful, sometimes causing rashes and blisters.

Nevada

Nevada is filled with dangerous animals to stay clear from including snakes, scorpions, and large mammals. But which animal is the most dangerous or deadliest? The most dangerous animal in this state is the Mojave rattlesnake. These venomous snakes though are rarely seen. While their bites are painful, they are rarely deadly, especially with medical intervention. 

New Hampshire

Moose make their third appearance on this list. They are the most dangerous animals in New Hampshire as they cause awful car accidents. According to some reports, in the last five years, New Hampshire has averaged about 75 moose and vehicle collisions. 

New Jersey

There aren’t a lot of dangerous or deadly animals in New Jersey. However, the holder of this title is the coyote. While attacks are almost unheard of, there is growing concern as coyote populations continue to increase and grow more comfortable in urban settings. In New Jersey, there are around 4,000 to 6,000 coyotes.

New Mexico

Mountain lions have a bite force of 350 psi and are around 2 to 3 feet tall.

New Mexico is home to so many venomous and dangerous animals that limiting the options for this title was hard. However, the most dangerous and deadliest animal in the state is the mountain lion. While attacks are uncommon, mountain lions are strong! One bite can definitely crack bones. Only two fatal mountain lion attacks have been recorded in the state.

New York

Although most don’t spread disease, a few species do! Mosquitos can spread diseases like Dengue Fever, Malaria, and Zika Virus.

North Carolina

Off the coast of North Carolina, you can find Portuguese man-of-wars. They sometimes wash up on beaches. These venomous animals deliver powerful and potentially fatal stings. In 2023, at least six tourists on Oak Island were stung by this creature.

North Dakota

The deadliest and most dangerous animal in North Dakota is the prairie rattlesnake. The mention of rattlesnakes is scary, but their bites are rarely fatal! Still, you don’t want to accidentally step on or scare one as their bites are painful.

Ohio

Moving onto Ohio, the deadliest animal in this state is the whitetail deer. They once again make our list! According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 101,912 deer-related crashes have occurred in the state and 2% of these accidents were fatal.

Oklahoma

Next on our list of the deadliest and most dangerous animals in each U.S. state is the western pygmy rattlesnakeOklahoma is home to many species of rattlesnakes. The western pygmy rattlesnake bites when afraid or threatened, although bites are uncommon. Death is unlikely, but the bites are painful and can result in the loss of a limb or digit without medical intervention.

Oregon

Oregon is home to one species of bear, the North American black bear. The state is home to up to 30,000 black bears. Although no fatal attacks have been recorded in the state, there have been several attacks. In 2023, a man in La Grande was attacked by a black bear. He first shot the black bear while the black bear was harassing his chickens. The next day, the bear attacked leaving the man with injuries on his arms and head.

Pennsylvania

Whitetail deer are gentle animals, but they cause multiple deaths in Pennsylvania each year. According to a report, Pennsylvania drivers have an astonishing 1-in-59 chance of a vehicular accident involving a game animal.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island has quite a few dangerous animals, although encounters are rare. The title holder of the deadliest and most dangerous animal in the state is the tiger shark. Tiger sharks are one of the most aggressive shark species. Still, attacks are incredibly rare. 

South Carolina

The most dangerous animal in South Carolina is the southern copperhead. These venomous snakes are around 2 feet long. They are excellent hunters, eating animals like cottontails, lizards, rats, baby turtles, and small snakes.

South Dakota

The deadliest animal in South Dakota is the bison. Although bison aren’t known to bite or hunt humans, they’ve been recorded attacking. A woman visiting Custer State Park and hiking was charged and gored by a bison. The bison’s horn went through her left thigh, leaving her paralyzed below the knee.

Tennessee

In Tennessee, the most dangerous animal is the black bear. For the most part, black bears are shy and stay clear from humans. However, attacks have happened in the state. In 2022, a black bear surprised and attacked a man in his cabin. Although they can be dangerous, we pose more of a threat to them than they do to us.

Texas

Texas is a large state. It has a surface area of 268,820 square miles. In this state, you can find ferocious bears, coyotes, sharks, alligators, snakes, and more. The most dangerous animal in the state is the alligator. In Texas, there are 400,000 to 500,000 American alligators. While attacks are rare, they can still happen so stay vigilant and never feed an alligator.

Utah

In Utah, the most dangerous and deadliest animal is the coyote. Although smaller than a wolf, coyotes can do a lot of damage. They rarely attack or approach humans though. However, you should keep an eye on your dog as coyotes attack domestic pets. Coyotes also attack and kill farm animals.

Vermont

Next on our list of the deadliest and most dangerous animal in each U.S. state are moose in Vermont. These large animals charge at people and also cause car accidents while stepping on the road. Moose are heavy and can be hard to safely avoid.

Virginia

There are so many dangerous animals to choose from in Virginia. However, the most dangerous and deadliest animal to make our list for Virginia is the bull shark. Although bull sharks can be found off the coast of Virginia, attacks are uncommon. The last fatal shark attack in Virginia occurred in 2001.

Washington

In Washington State there are around 500 grizzly bears.

What about Washington State? Which is the most dangerous animal in the Evergreen State? Although encounters are uncommon, grizzly bears are the most dangerous animals in Washington. While attacks are uncommon, no one wants to be in that situation. Experts recommend taking bear spray if you’re hiking in the Selkirk Mountains.

West Virginia

The whitetail deer lands on our list again. Although deer don’t attack humans and pose very little threat, they are extremely dangerous on the road. According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation, about 10,618 deer were hit on West Virginia highways from January 1st, 2023 to November 20th, 2023.

Wisconsin

There are a few very dangerous animals in Wisconsin. However, the winner of this title is the black bear. While black bears are the most dangerous animals in the state, attacks are rare. There have only been about a dozen black bear attacks in Wisconsin since 2013.

Wyoming

The deadliest and most dangerous animal in Wyoming is the bison. These massive animals are known to attack when they feel threatened. They can weigh around 2,000 pounds! In July of 2023, a woman near lakeside cabins in Yellowstone National Park was attacked by a bison and sustained serious injuries.
