Macao Special Administrative Region has a surprising wildlife story. Even though it is one of the most built-up places in the world, small coastal and estuary areas still help birds moving through the Pearl River Delta. The SAR's natural parts are mainly shoreline mudflats, sheltered bays, and managed wetlands that give feeding and resting places for migrants on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, especially in spring, autumn, and winter. Important habitats include tidal flats and estuarine shallows where shorebirds search for small animals, coastal wetlands and ponds for herons, egrets, and ducks, and green spaces and wooded hillsides that shelter passerines and raptors. Because Macao sits at a major estuary crossroads, even small roosts and feeding areas help tired migrants. Birding here is unique: people often see flyway migrants right next to high-rises and reclaimed land, making a compact stopover with high conservation value.

Macao Special Administrative Region has no large national park because it is very small and urban. Nature protection uses SAR-managed natural parks, reservoirs/catchment protection zones, and small coastal and estuarine wetlands. These sites are key stopover and wintering areas for migratory waterbirds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and protect subtropical forest, shrubland, and freshwater edges mostly on Coloane and Taipa.

Some of Macao's best migratory-bird viewing is on reclaimed land. The Cotai Ecological Zone was built to make up for lost habitat and now is a stopover and high-tide roost for waterbirds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
Despite being famous for high-rise development, Macao still gets "wild" estuary visitors-shorebirds and herons using tidal edges-because even small strips of mudflat and mangrove can be critical refuelling habitat during migration.
Birdwatchers have recorded globally threatened species in Macao's wetlands, including winter records of the Endangered black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor), a flagship species for conservation on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
Urban structures can substitute for cliffs and tall trees: raptors and swift-flying birds use Macao's skyline and waterfront wind corridors for hunting and commuting, so wildlife sightings can happen in the middle of the dense peninsula.
Macao keeps giant pandas at the Seac Pai Van Panda Pavilion on Coloane. Pandas are not native to the Pearl River Delta, so this is a human-made wildlife presence in the SAR.
Macao is China's smallest provincial-level division by land area (about 33 km²), yet local checklists have recorded 300+ bird species-an unusually high total for a territory of this size and urban density.
The Cotai Ecological Zone (created alongside Cotai land-reclamation works) is the largest purpose-managed wetland/mangrove block in Macao, concentrating much of the SAR's coastal bird habitat into one reserve-sized footprint.
Macao's highest point-Alto de Coloane (~172 m)-is also the territory's largest remaining continuous green upland, making the Coloane hills the SAR's top "hotspot" for forest-edge wildlife relative to any other part of Macao.
Waters immediately around Macao sit within the Pearl River Estuary, a globally important stronghold for the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin ("Chinese white dolphin", Sousa chinensis), which has been one of the world's best-known urban-adjacent dolphin populations.
