Puducherry's wildlife is shaped by tidal lagoons, river mouths, and monsoon-fed wetlands along busy coasts. Though small and split into four parts (Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam), it holds a wide mix of coastal and river life. The Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea and seasonal rains keep these places lively. Estuaries and coastal wetlands act as fish nurseries and draw many migratory and resident waterbirds. Mangrove patches and brackish backwaters shelter crabs, mollusks, young fish, and roosting birds. Nearshore beaches and dunes can host nesting sea turtles. River systems — especially the Godavari distributaries near Yanam and the backwaters near Mahe — make a mix of fresh and brackish water that adds to species variety and is great for bird watching during migration. Puducherry is a very small, split Union Territory of four enclaves across India’s southeast and southwest. Puducherry, Karaikal and Mahe are coastal; Yanam lies inland on the Godavari.
