Nagaland's wildlife is shaped by steep mountains, heavy monsoon rains, and forests that change quickly with elevation, making a small but rich part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. From subtropical broadleaf valleys to misty mid-elevation woods and cool temperate ridgelines, the state supports many birds and shy mammals that hide in remote hills and forests cared for by local people. Key habitats include evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, moist deciduous patches, bamboo brakes, and high-elevation temperate broadleaf and conifer pockets. This change with elevation is key for birds: hornbills, babblers, laughingthrushes, and other highland species occur close together, while forest corridors near the Myanmar border can still hold large predators and other sensitive animals. Rivers, streams, and ravines add places for frogs, snakes, and many small invertebrates.
