Amapá's wildlife is shaped by big, connected tracts of lowland Amazon rainforest. Rivers and seasonally flooded forests link the landscape and support many mammals, birds, and amphibians. Large protected areas and Indigenous territories help keep key processes going, such as long trips by large roaming predators and regrowth of floodplain forests. Main habitats include upland (non-flooded) rainforest, seasonally flooded floodplain forests (whitewater and blackwater), and the Amazon River estuary with mangroves and coastal wetlands near Macapá. The estuary and coast are important nurseries for fish and crustaceans and feeding grounds for waterbirds. Interior forests hold classic Amazon large animals (megafauna) and many kinds of primates.
