About Minas Gerais

Minas Gerais' wildlife is shaped by mountains, water, and meeting biomes. The Espinhaço Range and Mantiqueira Mountains make cool highlands, forested valleys, and open savannas close together, so very different species can live near each other. Many rivers start on rocky plateaus and cloudy ridges, so Minas Gerais feeds big river basins far away. Two biodiversity hotspots meet here: the Atlantic Forest and the Brazilian savanna. In Atlantic Forest remnants and gallery forests, thick canopies and humid spots support primates, colorful birds, frogs, and orchids. In the Brazilian savanna, fire-adapted grasslands and palm wetlands support open-country mammals, many raptors, and ground birds. Primary Threats

  • Atlantic Forest remnants are being cleared and broken up for cattle pasture, commercial tree plantations, and city growth. Brazilian savanna in western and northern Minas Gerais is being cleared. Rocky montane grasslands of the Espinhaco Range are lost or damaged by mining, roads, and frequent human-set fires, hurting endemic plants.
  • Expansion/intensification of cattle pasture and mechanized crops (e.g., soy/maize in western MG; coffee across the south/southeast) drives native-vegetation clearing and riparian degradation in headwaters feeding the São Francisco and Paraná basins, increasing sedimentation and reducing connectivity between forest fragments.
  • Mining for iron ore and other minerals in the Iron Quadrangle and nearby ranges removes habitat, makes dust and noise, and fills streams with sediment. Tailings-dam breaks and pollution hurt aquatic life and riparian areas, especially in the Doce River and Sao Francisco systems.
  • Water pollution from mining effluents, tailings and acid drainage, and urban and industrial sewage affects major basins (Doce, the Velhas River-Sao Francisco system, Paraopeba, Grande). This reduces fish and invertebrate diversity, degrades wetlands, and can impact species dependent on clean headwaters and intact riparian corridors.
  • Road expansion and upgrading (including corridors connecting Belo Horizonte to mining/industrial hubs and agricultural regions) increase wildlife roadkill, facilitate land speculation/deforestation, and fragment remaining Atlantic Forest and Cerrado patches; transmission lines and new access roads into montane areas open previously isolated habitats.
  • Hydropower reservoirs, small dams, and water withdrawals modify flow regimes and block fish migrations in the Sao Francisco and Parana headwaters; channelization and riparian clearing simplify river habitats, while fire-regime alteration in the Espinhaco Range contributes to vegetation shifts in rocky montane grasslands.
  • Rising temperatures and altered rainfall intensify droughts and heat stress in the Cerrado and northern Minas Gerais, increase wildfire frequency and severity in montane systems, and threaten headwater reliability. Montane endemics in rocky montane grasslands have limited upslope refugia, making them particularly vulnerable.
  • Although large-scale old-growth logging is less dominant than in Amazon states, illegal/unsustainable extraction of native timber and fuelwood persists in some regions, and the replacement of native forests with eucalyptus plantations can reduce habitat quality and water availability when not well managed.
  • Growth around Belo Horizonte metropolitan area and regional cities (e.g., in the Rio Doce and southern MG corridors) expands into surrounding forest fragments, increases sewage loads, and drives demand for water and sand/aggregate extraction, affecting nearby rivers and protected-area buffer zones.
  • Non-native grasses and pasture species promote more flammable landscapes; invasive/introduced fishes (and reservoir-favored species) can outcompete native river fauna in dammed systems; feral/domestic animals (dogs/cats) impact ground-nesting birds and small vertebrates near edges.
  • Wildlife diseases tied to fragmentation and human proximity (e.g., arboviruses affecting primates such as yellow fever outbreaks) can cause rapid declines in susceptible populations, especially in Atlantic Forest fragments around human settlements.
  • Subsistence and opportunistic hunting in rural landscapes reduces populations of medium/large mammals (e.g., peccaries, deer) and can depress key seed dispersers; hunting pressure can be concentrated near roads, forest edges, and river access points.
  • Capture and trafficking of songbirds (notably passerines such as seedeaters) persists in parts of southeastern Brazil, including MG, impacting small, localized populations and undermining recovery efforts in open habitats and forest-edge mosaics.
  • Conflict occurs where large carnivores and mesocarnivores (e.g., pumas) overlap with livestock areas; retaliatory killing and habitat intolerance can reduce viability of wide-ranging species in fragmented Atlantic Forest/Cerrado mosaics.
  • Overuse of water for urban supply, irrigation, and industry in drought-prone periods lowers flows in headwater streams, reduces wetland extent, and stresses aquatic species; sand and gravel extraction can destabilize riverbeds and riparian zones.
  • High visitation pressure in iconic parks (for example, Serra do Cipo, Ibitipoca, Canastra) can cause trail erosion, disturbance to sensitive fauna, and localized pollution if not tightly managed; off-road access and unregulated camping increase fire risk in dry seasons.

Despite its fox-like look, the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is a major fruit-eater in Minas Gerais; it regularly consumes the wolf apple (Solanum lycocarpum) and disperses its seeds, functioning as a key Cerrado seed-spreader.

The northern muriqui is known for unusually peaceful social behavior for a large primate-males often use embraces to diffuse tension, and serious fights are rare compared with many other monkey species.

Minas Gerais has true cave-adapted fish: the Itacarambi blind catfish (Trichomycterus itacarambiensis) from limestone caves in the Itacarambi region has reduced/absent eyes and little pigment-classic evolution to permanent darkness.

The Brazilian merganser is a "duck of rapids," not ponds: it depends on clear, fast-flowing rivers with rocky channels and nests in cavities (not reed beds), making it extremely vulnerable to siltation and river damming.

In the nutrient-poor soils of the Espinhaco rupestrian grasslands, carnivorous plants are common-sundews (Drosera) and bladderworts (Utricularia) trap insects to supplement nitrogen and phosphorus where the ground provides very little.

Minas Gerais is a key home for the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus), the largest primate in the Americas. Atlantic Forest reserves like Feliciano Miguel Abdala Reserve (Caratinga) hold one of the biggest monitored populations.

In northern Minas Gerais, Big Window Cave in Peruacu Caves National Park contains the famed 28-meter stalactite known as the "Ballerina's Leg," often cited among the largest in the world.

Canastra Range National Park is one of the most important remaining breeding refuges for the Brazilian merganser (Mergus octosetaceus), a Critically Endangered duck with only a few hundred individuals left globally.

Minas Gerais' Cerrado and highland mosaics support the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), the tallest wild canid in South America-an animal so long-legged it can see over tall grass while hunting.

The Cipo Mountains (part of the Backbone Mountain Range) have very high plant diversity and many endemic species in rocky montane grasslands: over 1,600 vascular plant species recorded in and near Cipo Mountains National Park.
