About Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro's wildlife is shaped by the Atlantic Forest, a threatened area with many kinds of plants and animals, especially in steep mountains and protected forest patches despite heavy coastal development. Even with Brazil’s biggest city at its heart, the state still has rich groups of birds, primates, frogs, orchids, and butterflies adapted to steep slopes, misty heights, and forest interiors. The Serra do Mar and nearby ranges are the backbone of Rio’s nature, with cloud and mountain forests that give shelter to forest species and help supply clean water. On the coastal plain, a mix of sand-plain scrub, sandy forests, beaches, mangroves, and lagoons supports migratory shorebirds, waterbirds, and special plants and reptiles. Primary Threats

  • Continued conversion and degradation of remaining lowland Atlantic Forest fragments for housing, pasture, small-scale agriculture, and industrial areas. Coastal sandy-plain vegetation and wetlands are particularly vulnerable because they occur on high-value coastal land, and remaining patches are often small and isolated.
  • The growth of Rio de Janeiro and nearby towns pushes sprawl into hills and green spaces, increases informal settlements near protected areas, and speeds coastal development that breaks up dunes, sandy vegetation, and lagoon margins. It also raises roadkill and disturbs forest corridors near the city.
  • Chronic sewage and industrial and port pollution in Guanabara Bay and rivers lowers water quality, harms mangroves and fisheries, and raises plastic, oil, and chemical risks for marine fauna. Eutrophication and poor water also harm coastal lagoons, birds, fish nurseries, and wetlands.
  • Highway development and heavy-traffic corridors increase fragmentation and wildlife mortality, while ports, shipyards, dredging, and coastal engineering alter estuarine habitats. Energy and industrial infrastructure (including oil and gas logistics on the coast) adds noise, light, and spill risk.
  • Intense artisanal and industrial fishing pressure along the Rio de Janeiro coast and in bays reduces target stocks and top predators and increases bycatch of threatened fauna (including sea turtles and small coastal dolphins such as the La Plata dolphin).
  • High tourism and recreation intensity on beaches, dunes, and islands (boat traffic, anchoring, and artificial night lighting) disrupts seabirds and sea turtle nesting, degrades dunes and coastal vegetation through trampling, and increases disturbance in coastal protected areas.
  • Illegal hunting persists in some rural and fragmented forest landscapes, affecting medium-to-large vertebrates and undermining recovery in small Atlantic Forest remnants where populations are already low.
  • Capture and illegal trade of songbirds and other wildlife remains a pressure, with impacts amplified by habitat fragmentation because local populations are more easily depleted. Enforcement is challenging near major transport routes and urban markets.
  • Illegal extraction of native timber and heart-of-palm from the native jucara palm degrades forest structure and food availability for wildlife. Selective removal increases edge effects and can facilitate further degradation.
  • Introduced marmosets — common marmoset and black-tufted marmoset — and their hybrids compete with native primates and can spread disease. Feral dogs and cats eat more native animals near cities and beaches, and invasive plants change coastal vegetation in disturbed areas.
  • Yellow fever outbreaks have caused severe mortality in Atlantic Forest primates in southeastern Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro, creating major conservation setbacks for small and isolated primate populations. Other taxa such as amphibians also face disease risks in montane environments.
  • Sea-level rise and stronger storm surges cause beach erosion and flood dunes and coastal plants, harming sea turtle nests. Warmer, changing rain patterns raise drought and fire risk at forest edges, change lagoon salinity and water quality, and increase runoff and sediment into coastal habitats.
  • Localized sand extraction and quarrying for construction materials can degrade dunes, coastal vegetation, and hill landscapes, increasing sedimentation and altering drainage; cumulative impacts can be significant near rapidly urbanizing coastal zones.
  • River channelization, wetland drainage, shoreline armoring, and engineered lagoon mouth openings change hydrology and sediment dynamics, reducing mangrove and coastal wetland function and fish nursery habitat. Human-ignited fire can also simplify vegetation structure in fragmented forest and coastal habitats.
  • Peri-urban wildlife can trigger conflict through crop damage, vehicle collisions, or perceived health risks, leading to pressure for removal rather than coexistence in densely populated watersheds.
  • High water demand from cities and industry, combined with watershed degradation, can reduce environmental flows and worsen water quality in rivers feeding bays and lagoons. Depleted fisheries and reduced ecosystem services can increase pressure on remaining natural areas.

Some of Rio's most range-restricted, threatened birds aren't rainforest specialists at all: the Restinga Antwren (Formicivora littoralis) is endemic to the state's sandy coastal scrub habitat-one of the most overlooked habitats between beaches and cities.

Marshes and lowland forests around Guanabara Bay hold the Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis), described in the 1990s and known from only a few sites—a new species living in a very urban area.

At Arraial do Cabo, seasonal upwelling pulls cold, nutrient-rich deep water to the surface at a tropical latitude, creating an unusual mix of marine life (warm-water coastal species alongside species more typical of cooler waters) and boosting local productivity.

Capybaras can be seen living in highly urban settings in Rio-using canals, lagoons, and grassy margins in areas like Barra da Tijuca/Jacarepagua-illustrating how a large wild mammal can exploit city waterways.

Tijuca's wildlife community is partly "re-built": after historic deforestation, much of the forest was replanted and several animals later recolonized or were reintroduced-so today's urban rainforest is both natural habitat and a long-running restoration experiment.

Tijuca National Park (≈3,953 ha) inside the city of Rio de Janeiro is widely cited as the world's largest urban rainforest-large enough to support free-ranging mammals like sloths, coatis, and howler monkeys within a major metropolis.

Itatiaia National Park (spanning RJ/MG) is one of the most bird-rich protected areas in Brazil: more than ~370 bird species have been recorded there, an exceptional total for a single Atlantic Forest site.

Araruama Lagoon (in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro State) is Brazil's largest hypersaline lagoon (≈220 km²), with salinity often above seawater-creating an extreme habitat where only salt-tolerant fish and invertebrates thrive.

The golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), native to the lowland Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro, rose from about 200 wild animals in the 1970s to roughly 3,000–4,000 today after strong protection and reintroduction efforts.

Rio de Janeiro's Atlantic Forest leaf litter hosts some of the tiniest frogs on Earth, including the minute "flea-toad" Brachycephalus didactylus (around 1 cm long), placing it among the smallest vertebrates known.
